Tarakihi, or Ocean Bream is common around New Zealand. They are silvery-grey, with a blue-green sheen, which shades to silver and white on the belly. There is a distinctive black band immediately behind the head.
It's a highly regarded fish commercially and sought after by recreational anglers. Large Tarakihi have been known to reach up to 5-6kg in weight.
They are generally found in schools, at depths up 100 to 250 metres. Known for their longeivity, many adults are 10-20 years old, with some even reaching 50 years of age.
